Debt is a common problem for many, and can take as much will power and fortitude in handling a crisis situation as weight loss and health issues. Debt troubles can consume individuals, thus prompting the need to get out from underneath the burden, and stay out of it. Does this sound like you?

Start with Your Own Credit Report, Call Creditors, Do some Consolidation.

Start by taking an inventory of all of your debt. Download or send for your credit reports and look them over very carefully. If you find there are errors on your report, such as debt that has been cleared but has not been taken off your report or charges for items or services that you did not purchase, make some phone calls to get them cleared away.

Call creditors and negotiate your monthly payments. Most are willing to work with you, to prevent losing all the money in a bankruptcy. Always get the agreement in writing before sending out the first payment. If creditors seem less than willing to negotiate, move into the next phase.

Loan consolidation can be a great alternative for those in financial distress. Once you have negotiated and can do no more, many companies offer low interest loans for consolidating all your debt (if your credit score is acceptable), and if not, debt counseling agencies are resources that contact your creditors for you. They may be able to renegotiate payment and interest terms that will allow you to make one lower payment for a fee.

In the meantime, if possible, take on a second job, sell what you don’t need and cut up your credit cards. Low interest loans often mean longer terms so do your best to pay more than the minimum payments on your consolidation loan. If you find consolidation is not your answer and you have no other choice, then bankruptcy is a valid option.

Find out how to become Debt Free and even how to destroy all of your debts quickly and easily Debt Solutions here.

Debt affects millions of people today. Bankruptcy’s are on the rise and more and more people are struggling to stay afloat.

For those that don’t manage to avoid bankruptcy, the effects can stay with them for many years. The stigma that was once attached to it has lessened but it can and does still cause many difficulties for its victims. For example, It can cause you trouble when you apply for a job because employers can now credit check you.

Many people who have become trapped with large debts will find that bankruptcy is their only option and if that is the case, you should face it head on. For most though, options may still exist. If this is the case for you, it is important that you take action as soon as possible.

One of the big causes of the debt problem for many people is credit cards. Excessive spending on credit cards along with only paying the minimum balance each month is a sure fire way to spiral into deeper and deeper debt.

It seems to be almost the norm in our culture to think that we are owed something and that we should be able to get the things that we want as soon as we want it. The banks and credit card companies have spent allot of money trying to convince us of this. That way, they can keep us owing them money and working for them forever!

It is time to take a stand and make a difference in your life and to help you do that, here are the 7 top tips to help you become debt free.

Tip 1. Write down all of your debts. It sounds simple, but you’d be amazed at the difference that this one simple step can make. Make a list of all of your debts, list the amount, who it is owed to and the monthly repayments. This can be hard as it is difficult to face up to this problem, especially if you have been hiding from it for some time. It is the most important step though so get started now.

Tip 2. Prioritize your debts. Which are the most pressing debts? If you stand to lose something (like your house) by not paying then that is the most important debt. Next, if you have already had trouble and have come to an arrangement with a creditor, you should try to stick to it. Next, list your debts by interest rate, highest to lowest.

Tip 3. Destroy your Credit Cards. While you still have your credit cards, there is always a chance that you will use them. No matter how strong you think you are, there may come a time when you are weak and will use them. If you don’t have them then you can’t, so get rid of them! Don’t forget to cancel them with the issuer when you have paid them off otherwise it will still show on your file as available credit.

Tip 4. Take the time to examine your Credit report. You can get a copy of your credit report from a number of sources online now. Most of these services will also send you alerts when it is updated. This can help you stay on top of identity theft. The most important reason to check it out though is to make sure that you have no black marks on it.

Tip 5. Write down and stick to a budget. When you stick to a budget, it fills you with confidence that you can make a positive change and break free of your debt trouble. It also makes it much more likely that you will because you know that you are working everyday towards improving your situation.

Tip 6. Never swap unsecured debt for secured debt. Companies will throw offers at you once they learn that you are in debt trouble and you are a home owner, but they will reposes your home at the first opportunity if you start missing payments so don’t do this unless you have no other option and always seek impartial advice first.

Tip 7. Don’t do it alone. There is plenty of help and advice available to you; you just have to look for it. Talk to debt charities, I guarantee that they won’t be surprised or shocked no matter how bad your situation is. They will however be able to offer good and helpful advice.

How do you know which companies to trust when chosing Debt Consolidation loans. Find reviews of the best companies and links to the best resources.

We also have information on Debt Consolidation Non Profit organisations

Debt consolidation can be a life line for those with problem debts. It can also be the weight that pushes you under. It all depends on how you deal with it.

Debts can creep up on you! One minute you are taking out your first overdraft and it feels like free money! Next someone offers you a store card then a credit card and because you are not handing over cold hard cash, it feels easier to spend!

The minimum payments are small and at first you don’t notice the money coming straight out of your bank each month but soon they start to add up. At this point, many people have debts with many different lenders and as the minimum payments together become substantial. you are forced to spend on your credit cards just to pay your bills or buy food each month.

If you watch T.V., you can’t avoid adverts for debt consolidation and refinancing. It can be a great idea if you do it right. Unfortunately, most people handle it totally wrong and end up in a much worse situation with debt.

So, what are the good and bad ways to deal with debt consolidation? Well, there are a number of guidelines that you should stick to.

First, never swap an unsecured loan for a secured one. Many companies offer to let you consolidate your debts but secure the new loan on your property. (homeowner loans or any time the advert asks if you own your home). It is a bad idea to make this swap because if you default on an unsecured loan, the worse that they can do to get the money back is to get a County Court judgment, but if you secure the loan on your house, they can take that off you!

Next, often, you will be able to reduce your monthly outgoings with a consolidation loan. This can be highly beneficial to enable you to get back on top of your finances. Bear in mind though, that you are normally paying less because you are paying the loan over a much longer period. You still owe the same amount and will actually end up paying much more in interest over the term of the loan.

The last point is perhaps the most important and is where most people make their mistake. There are two sides to it. One, you are tempted to lend more than you already owe so that you have more to spend. This just puts you further in debt and makes t he situation worse. Two, You get the loan and put off paying off your debts. It feels nice to have all that money sitting in your bank account and it is hard to part with it by just giving it away to your creditors. So, you keep putting it off until you have spent it all. Now your situation is twice as bad!

Debt consolidation can be a great way to give yourself breathing room and get on top of your finances again, but only if you handle it responsibly and do it right!
